Design and architecture styles constantly evolve, and homeowners are always on the lookout for styles to make their property more attractive.
One way that is often overlooked is updating your garage door. Over the past few years, garage‑door makers have come out with new designs that have a more contemporary feel. One of the most forward‑thinking designers is Garaga. The company now has 24 different door models, and seven that are considered contemporary designs.
Here is what you need to know if you think a modern, contemporary door will fit with your home’s architecture.
First of all, what do terms like “modern” and “contemporary” actually mean?
Most “contemporary” homes have clean, straight lines and roofs that are either flat or have four equal sections. The exteriors are usually defined by wood, stone or siding. Often, two of these elements are combined together. Color schemes for contemporary homes are often darker than older homes, with browns being one of the more‑popular hues.
Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the founders of the “modern” architecture style that is so common in North America. His Usonian design was the inspiration for the “ranch” style homes that were built in great number in the 1950s and ‘60s.
Garaga’s contemporary door options
Garaga has a line of contemporary garage doors with traits, such as clean, straight lines and angles, that will match perfectly with a modern home style. Here are the options:
- The VOG: with a deep, v‑shaped, horizontal groove, 40″ x 1 ¼” (102 x 3 cm) long on each section, giving you a subtle, but sleek, style.
- The MODERNO: this door has a thin 3⁄16″ (5 mm), continuous line running the full width of the door. The Moderno comes in two configurations: the 2‑Bead with each section having a line at the top and bottom, and the Multi, with equally spaced lines every 4 or so inches.
- The GROOVED: this model has a continuous horizontal line, this time 1″‑high (25 mm) over the full width of the door. The number of grooves may be either 4 or 5 depending on the height of the door sections.
- The FLUSH model: for a truly streamlined look, the FLUSH has no embossed lines or grooves, just is a light woodgrain finish to give the impression of a wooden carriage house door from the 1950s.
Enhance the design with windows
Large windows that let in natural light are a common feature of contemporary residential architecture. Garaga’s modern door designs can be enhanced with large windows, such as 40″ x 13″ (102 x 32 cm). These can be positioned to suit your needs on the door.
In addition to size and placement, you can also choose different glass types. There are windows with clear glass, of course, but you can also get a printed design; stained glass, and glass that is frosted, satin, textured or with horizontal lines.
Numerous window choices are available
Does Garaga have “all‑glass” doors?
Garaga does indeed have a door model with all‑glass sections. This option is called their California door. Thanks to its strong aluminum frame, this option is actually exceedingly strong. As with smaller windows, the options for all‑glass sections include clear glass, satin, glue chip, and even fluted polycarbonate. Tinting is also available.
